Should MBSR Be Part of Your Anxiety Treatment?
MBSR deserves a place in the conversation about how we treat anxiety.

For millions of people living with anxiety, finding lasting relief can feel like a journey through different treatment options and multiple medication trials. Medication and therapy are well-established approaches, but could mindfulness also play an important role? A single-blind, randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry explored this question by comparing an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program with escitalopram, a commonly prescribed medication for anxiety disorders.
The results: participants in both groups experienced meaningful reductions in anxiety symptoms, and MBSR was found to be not inferior to escitalopram in reducing anxiety severity. These findings suggest that structured mindfulness training may be a valuable evidence-based option for people with anxiety, particularly those interested in a non-medication approach.
Of note, MBSR in this trial was delivered in person, with trained meditation teachers available weekly to answer questions and guide practices. MBSR isn’t a quick fix. It’s a structed 8-week course that requires regular participation and practice.
My perspective is that we don't necessarily have to choose one approach over another. Medication, therapy, and MBSR each address different aspects of anxiety, and I believe that combining these approaches—when appropriate for the individual—may provide the most comprehensive support and the best opportunity for meaningful, lasting improvement. Of course, treatment should always be personalized and discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. The bigger takeaway from this study is that mindfulness deserves a place in the conversation about how we treat anxiety.
